I ALWAYS STRUGGLE WITH THE WORD TREND.
In its best light it means "relevant style ideas that multiple designers are feeling for," but it's often used to reference "here today, gone tomorrow fashion" and can have a way of making you feel like you aren't relevant unless you are wearing X. With so many trends, it can feel like you are in a constant fashion spin cycle if you try to buy, wear and keep up with them all.
When I interviewed Gabriele Hackworthy, fashion director of Net-A-Porter, earlier this summer for the podcast, she shared that she doesn't even use the word "trend" in the office or the magazine. This intrigued me as she explained it's not only about the right trends, it's about having the right pieces. What's the difference you ask? Pieces should have longevity beyond next season in your closet making up a strong foundation to your wardrobe. These should be your classics. The fit should be on point for your body and you should feel great in each piece (think the blazer that fits you like a glove, your go-to pair of skinny jeans, your perfect white t-shirt...) Do the exercise to find your modern pieces and use them as a foundation for each look. The best personal style blends trend with foundational classics in each look. My rule? Style every look with only one trend-inspired piece balanced with your foundational classics. A solid foundation that's true to you ensures confident style that represents you with a great balance of trend and effortless basics. You can't avoid the 70's for fall, it's everywhere you look. Magazines will give you a full blown head-to-toe version for inspiration but here are five modern style formulas to blend the 70's into your personal style.
