Whether you're going near or far, summer travel is an escape from your daily routine...a chance to reflect, regroup, and daydream. My friend Ashley Pittman creates beautiful jewelry in collaboration with women entrepreneurs in Africa. She employs over 75 artisans in Kenya, providing them with fair wages, expansion opportunities, and business development training. This spring, she asked me to be on her SXSW panel to talk about sustainable fashion from an editor's perspective. I joined Jessica Alba's Honest CEO and the head of Charitable Initiatives for Neiman Marcus in her very inspiring panel discussion.

I returned back to New York to find a surprise from Ashley, this amazing book, African Ceremonies, a beauitfully curated collection of photographs of indigenous groups. While flipping through this stunning coffee table book the other day, I was struck by the color...the patterns...the vibrancy so inherent in their inspires me to live (and travel) on the bright side. Here's a sneak peek at what I'm packing in my favorite August California make-up-bag-turned-clutch for my short (but sweet) summer trips.  Add a long tassel necklace and Ashley's chic bangles and you're ready for any adventure.
