There was a good five year span of my adult life that i never wore jeans.
Yes, you heard that right. I wasn't thrilled with the way I looked in them so I spent a long portion of my 20's and early 30's living in skirts and dresses. I somehow got it in my head that I didn't look good in jeans. It rolled off my tongue so often I began to believe it. The truth is I didn't wear jeans because I didn't think I looked like the "girl in the picture." As I'm telling you this I realize how ridiculous it sounds- but I had an unrealistic vision of what I wanted to look like should I ever wear jeans. It was a time in my life when I was overly critical of myself and in retrospect I missed out on things I would have really enjoyed wearing because of my narrow vision.
One day I was out with a friend and she convinced me to try on a pair of jeans she swore by. They had a ton of stretch (the best kind), hugged my body and you know what? I actually liked them. And when I looked in the mirror, I didn't see that girl in the picture...I saw myself. The girl in the picture isn't a reality. She never will be. But the reality is the girl staring back in the mirror from you...you know the one that is obsessed with Mr. Robot right now, loves a third glass of wine, fourth day hair and is a huge fan of anyone wearing heels on the subway. Regardless of what she looks like in jeans, she's pretty great. Flash forward to having tried on about a million pairs of jeans since then. I will tell you the hard, honest truth is that every pair doesn't look good on everyone and you can't judge what you think you will (or should) look like by an ad or image. Trying on a string that don't work for you can lead to wanting to write off the whole category, but trust me when you find that magic pair you will swear by them.
1) BECOME YOUR BEST FIT EXPERT
Have you seen yourself in high waisted, mid-rise and jeans that sit low on the waist? Do you know if you like yourself in a relaxed leg, cropped leg, flare leg or boyfriend? Have you tried on a variety of fabrics and brands to understand what fits and styles you like yourself best in? Unfortunately, even I can't give you a silver bullet when it comes to finding your perfect pair(s) of jeans. I'll be the first one to tell you that even though a pair of jeans may technically "fit" you may not like the way you look in a certain leg shape. Sometimes this is because we aren't used to seeing silhouettes we don't normally wear on our body and othertimes it's because it's just not the right style for us. When the skinny jean was first becoming popular many women never thought they would ever wear them. Now, virtually everyone you know has a favorite pair of skinny jeans. They've become a wardrobe foundation.
2) DO THE WORK TO FIND YOUR STAPLES
Take your best friend, have a glass of wine at lunch and hit a department store with a huge selection of jeans. Try on a huge variety of fits, fabrics, leg shapes and brands. Tke pictures of yourself in the mirror so you have a reference. Seeing yourself in a wide spectrum of fits will give you an instant library of what styles and cuts (and brands) you like best. As new denim trends come in and out, you'll be able to easily evaluate which trends are likely to work for you.
2) FABRIC IS IMPORTANT
I swear by a little (or alot of) stretch in my jeans. In my podcast this week, Frame founder, Jens Grede shares why premium denim is more expensive than mass market denim. It's a common and valid question. The answer usually lies in the quality of the fabric. More expensive fabrics like those used in premium denim have better recovery, meaning they hold their shape. A.k.a. by 3pm you won't have a saggy butt and knees. Frame is actually one of the leading premium denim brands because of their fabrics.
Frame Denim has long been a favorite of mine and is one of the leading premium denim brands not only with on-trend styles but because of their fabrics. When I attended their spring/summer presentation during New York fashion week, I grabbed their founder, Jens Grede for some insider tips on what's trending in fall denim and how we can restyle our favorites in new ways.
